Dmitry Medvedev threatens nuclear strikes for countries sending troops to Ukraine
Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, has issued a warning on his Telegram channel on May 6, indicating Russia's intention to launch nuclear attacks on the capitals of European nations that have deployed troops to Ukraine.
Medvedev's declaration, targeting Washington, Paris, and London, underscores the severity of Russia's response to what it perceives as Western interference in the Ukraine conflict. He justifies this extreme measure by arguing that the deployment of troops by European countries constitutes direct involvement in the war, obliging Russia to retaliate. In his statement, Medvedev asserts,
"The sending of troops to the territory of Ukraine leads to the direct entry of these countries into the war, and we are obliged to respond to this."
He emphasizes that the retaliation will not be confined to Ukrainian territory, warning,
"None of them can hide in the Capitol, in the Elysée Palace, or in 10 Downing Street."
The rhetoric employed by Medvedev harkens back to the tensions of the Cold War era, invoking the historical confrontation between Kennedy and Khrushchev. He laments the failure of current Western leaders to grasp the gravity of the situation, accusing them of shortsightedness and irresponsibility.
In a further display of assertiveness, the Russian Ministry of Defense has announced plans to conduct exercises involving non-strategic nuclear forces. Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly ordered the General Staff to prepare for these drills, citing the need to enhance readiness in response to Western statements regarding troop deployment in Ukraine. The exercises will involve missile formations, aviation assets, and naval forces from the Southern Military District, signaling Moscow's determination to demonstrate its nuclear capabilities.
"Today, the General Staff began preparations for the exercises, including activities for practical testing of the preparation and use of non-strategic nuclear weapons," Medvedev says.
The Kremlin justifies these exercises as necessary for increasing the readiness of non-strategic nuclear forces to perform combat missions. According to a statement from the Kremlin,
"During the training, a number of events will be held to prepare and use non-strategic nuclear weapons."
