Russian Deputy Defence Minister Timur Ivanov was detained on April 23 and is under investigation for allegedly taking a bribe, involving at least RUB 1 mn (almost $11,000). Svetlana Petrenko, spokeswoman for the Investigative Committee, stated, "Appropriate investigative actions are being carried out." Details regarding the specifics of the case were not disclosed, the Russian Federation's Investigative Committee reports.
The exact timing of Deputy Defence Minister Timur Ivanov's detention is not confirmed. Records show he attended a Defence Ministry board meeting chaired by Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu on April 23. The Investigative Committee has indicated plans to formally request Ivanov's arrest through the judicial system.
Further actions related to the investigation included operations at Ivanov's cottage in Dagestan. Unverified reports claim that three additional individuals were detained along with Ivanov. He was transported by FSB officers to the central office of the Investigative Committee by late evening on April 23 and subsequently held in a temporary detention facility overnight.
Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov reported that both President Vladimir Putin and Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu were informed before the detention. As of now, the Russian Defence Ministry has not commented on the incident.
Since 2016, Timur Ivanov served as Deputy Defence Minister, previously heading Oboronstroy and occupying a role in the Moscow Region government under Shoigu. His duties encompassed oversight of construction, military mortgages, housing, medical support, property management, and troop cantonment for the Russian Armed Forces.
Following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Ivanov was responsible for major military construction projects, including efforts in occupied Mariupol. In 2019, Forbes magazine listed him in their ranking of the wealthiest law enforcers, with a family income reported at RUB 136.7 mn ($1.5 mn) and a personal income of RUB 13.6 mn ($146,000).
Ivanov has been under US sanctions since March 2022 and EU sanctions since October 2022.
