During a video conference presided over by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan, it was disclosed that a total of 28 officials faced disciplinary measures for purported shortcomings in their duties, the press secretary of the president reported.
The conference primarily focused on the commencement of the spring planting season and the improvement of waste management infrastructure as part of the "Yashil Makon" initiative" project. Deliberations centered on optimizing environmental efforts and addressing deficiencies across various administrative levels.
President Mirziyoyev underscored the importance of scrutinizing the performance of officials at regional and district levels, particularly those tasked with construction, communal services, and ecological oversight.
The deputy governors of Kasbi, Karshi, and Turakurgan districts were relieved of their positions, alongside several other officials, including deputy governors from six regions. Additionally, a probationary period was imposed on all heads of environmental departments, reflecting the gravity of the situation.
The "Yashil Makon" initiative, aimed at fostering environmental sustainability, has set ambitious targets, including the planting of 125 mn saplings during the upcoming spring season. However, concerns have been raised regarding the lack of progress in certain regions, where crucial aspects such as land allocation and funding for irrigation remain unresolved.
For instance, while progress has been made in allocating land and commencing work in areas like Karakalpakstan, Namangan, and Kashkadarya, other regions, including Andijan, Bukhara, Surkhandarya, and parts of Tashkent, are yet to finalize their plans.
The delay is particularly conspicuous in urban centers such as Takhiatosh, Mirzachol, Zafarabad, Sharof Rashidov, Syrdaryo, Aqoltin, Khavos, Sardoba, Gulistan, Khanabad, Gulistan, Termiz, Yangiyul, and several districts of Tashkent city, where only 30% of the planting targets have been met.
