Uzbekistan has enacted an indefinite moratorium on mining activities in the Syrdarya River basin, the Ministry of Justice reports.
The decree, scheduled to come into effect on May 1, 2024, prohibits the extraction of non-metallic materials from the bed of the Syrdarya River. Additionally, the decree imposes stricter penalties for environmental damage resulting from unauthorized mining of non-metallic materials.
Environmental Conservation Measures
The Ministry has also disclosed that alongside the moratorium, measures will be implemented to reinforce the banks of the Syrdarya River and restore damaged lands within the river's coastal zones. These efforts underscore Uzbekistan's commitment to safeguarding its natural resources and mitigating the adverse effects of mining activities on the environment.
The decision to impose a moratorium aligns with discussions held during a joint working group meeting between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in December 2023 in Astana. During the meeting, delegates addressed issues related to water quality monitoring in the Syrdarya River basin, conducted an inventory of potential pollution sources, and devised strategies to minimize their environmental impact.
