Arcieri Marco, the President of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID), embarked on his inaugural visit to Uzbekistan. The visit, marked by a series of high-level meetings and engagements, underscores the mutual commitment to advancing irrigation and drainage practices, crucial for sustainable development.
Upon his arrival, Marco was warmly received by Shavkat Khamraev, the Minister of Water Resources of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Minister Khamraev hailed Marco's visit as a pivotal opportunity to enrich collaboration and explore innovative approaches to address shared challenges in water management. Marco reciprocated the sentiment, expressing his enthusiasm to elevate the level of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the ICID.
"In my preparations for this visit, I was deeply impressed by Uzbekistan's commendable efforts in efficient water utilization, modernization of irrigation infrastructure, and adoption of cutting-edge technologies," remarked Marco during the meeting.
He specifically lauded Uzbekistan's leadership in the region in implementing water-saving measures, reflecting the nation's commitment to sustainability.
The meeting witnessed Vadim Sokolov, the head of the GEF agency of the International Island Rescue Fund, presenting the outcomes achieved under Uzbekistan's strategy for water resource management and irrigation sector development (2021-2023). Notable achievements highlighted encompassed water and electricity conservation, digitalization initiatives, and advancements in public-private partnerships.
Under the visionary leadership of Uzbekistan's president, a concerted effort has been initiated toward canal concreting, with plans underway to concrete 1,500 kilometers of large canals and 10,000 kilometers of smaller ones. Marco, along with his delegation, also visited the Scientific Research Institute of Irrigation and Water Problems, acquainting themselves with ongoing scientific endeavors, research activities, and the innovative showcase on drip irrigation.
Uzbekistan's membership in the ICID, dating back to 1994, has been characterized by active engagement in the organization's events, including annual congresses, executive board meetings, and international conferences. Minister Khamraev's tenure as the Vice-President of the ICID from 2019 underscores Uzbekistan's commitment to global water management initiatives, a role further reinforced by Vadim Sokolov's recent appointment as Vice-President of the International Island Rescue Fund.
Marco is slated to visit various ministries, universities, as well as key cities including Karshi, Nukus, and Khiva, where he will engage in a series of events aimed at bolstering collaboration and sharing best practices in irrigation and drainage.
