President Tokayev proposes changing Kazakhstan's coat of arms
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the President of Kazakhstan, has announced a competition to redesign the country's coat of arms, as reported by Tengrinews on March 15. Speaking at the National Congress meeting, President Tokayev expressed the need for a new emblem, citing concerns over the current design's complexity and its ties to the Soviet era.
As per to Tokayev, understanding the existing coat of arms is challenging due to its eclecticism and historical associations. He emphasized the importance of considering feedback from experts and citizens, particularly the youth, in the process of creating a new national emblem.
"If there is a general agreement, it is possible to create a special commission that will essentially consider all aspects and conduct a public discussion. Then, an open competition will be announced to create the best sketch of the new national emblem," President Tokayev stated.
Previously, the "Jana Adamdar" youth movement in Kazakhstan urged the population to contemplate a new coat of arms. They highlighted that the current emblem fails to reflect the country's future direction and values adequately.
"The coat of arms is not a company logo, a commemorative badge, or an emblem. The coat of arms means more. This is fate. However, the coat of arms we use now does not indicate the direction of the future, does not speak about our values. 70% of Kazakhs who took part in the survey did not know him," the "Jana Adamdar" movement stated.
