The Public Foundation for the Sustainable Development of the Katon-Karagay District in the East Kazakhstan Region clinched third place in the Thriving Communities category at the Green Destinations Top 100 Story Awards, announced during the international tourism exhibition, ITB Berlin 2024, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports reported.
The recognition underscores the concerted efforts undertaken by the local community and entrepreneurs towards sustainable development in the Katon-Karagay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its biodiversity. Spearheaded by Serik Tolukpayev and Kairat Akhmetov, the initiative has garnered acclaim for its strategic approach to preserving the region's ecological integrity while promoting responsible tourism practices.
"Katon-Karagay National Park, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the priority ecoregions of the World Wildlife Fund. Thanks to the initiative of local entrepreneurs Serik Tolukpayev and Kairat Akhmetov, a fund was created and the sustainable development strategy of Katon-Karagay has been systematically implemented for several years. The results of this work are highly noted in the world’s expert community, which inspires us. It should be noted that every rural region of Kazakhstan has the opportunity to follow the path of sustainable development. This requires a long-term development strategy for the area and joint efforts of society, business, and government in its implementation," said Serik Zhunussov, Executive Director of the fund.
Representatives of Kazakhstan's tourism industry, including the Vice Minister of Tourism and Sports, Yerzhan Yerkinbayev, and delegates from various regions, showcased the nation's commitment to sustainable tourism at ITB Berlin. The event provided a platform for promoting the upcoming V World Nomad Games, slated to take place from September 8 to 14, 2024, in Astana.
