The Commissioner for Human Rights in Moscow, Tatyana Potyayeva, revealed that the average monthly wage of a Central Asian migrant worker in Moscow stands at approximately $597 or UZS 7.5 mn.
A survey conducted by the ombudsman’s office in the autumn of 2023, involving 900 migrants aged between 18 and 60 from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan, provided further insights. The survey found that the majority of Uzbek migrants are employed at construction sites in Moscow, while Tajik migrants predominantly work in service sector enterprises such as hairdressing salons and dry cleaners.
Over half of the respondents reported working without a formal labour contract, receiving their wages in cash and bypassing payroll records. Approximately 44% of the migrants share rented accommodation, and a mere 3.7% of the foreign workers in Moscow paid medical insurance. Alarmingly, almost a quarter of the respondents avoid seeking medical help, even in cases of acute need.
The survey also revealed that over 40% of the migrants believe that they are well-received by the local Muscovites, with only 5% reporting experiences of hostility.
The report also included data from Russian law enforcement agencies on the registration of migrant workers in the country. In the first 6M 2023, foreign workers received 9.1 mn relevant documents. Notably, Uzbek citizens accounted for 1.6 mn of these recipients.
