President Sadyr Japarov of the Kyrgyz Republic engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 21, as part of his official visit to the Russian Federation, the presidential service reported. The negotiations took place in Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, highlighting the continuing efforts to strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations.
President Putin welcomed President Japarov, acknowledging the prosperous relationship between Kyrgyzstan and Russia across various sectors, underlining their strategic partnership and alliance. He expressed gratitude for President Japarov's attention to the promotion of the Russian language within Kyrgyzstan, a gesture that reflects the cultural and linguistic bonds shared by the two countries.
“Our bilateral relations, rooted in the fundamental treaty, are making advances across all areas of cooperation. Russia remains one of Kyrgyzstan’s main trade and economic partners with 35% of direct investment in the Kyrgyz economy coming from Russia. We will continue to work on these matters. Things are making steady progress in the humanitarian sphere. We are thankful to you for your focus on promoting the Russian language. You and I opened schools not long ago. I remember very well my visit to your country in late 2023, I believe it was October. Thank you very much for your hospitality. We are delighted to welcome you to Russia,” President Putin noted.
In response, President Japarov conveyed his appreciation for the warm reception and extended his best wishes for the successful organization of the "Games of the Future" tournament, a multi-sport event aimed at captivating audiences worldwide. He also extended his well wishes to President Putin for the upcoming election campaign. Recognizing the fruitful cooperation following President Putin's visit to Kyrgyzstan in 2023, President Japarov expressed gratitude for Russia's continuous support and assistance.
Furthermore, President Japarov cordially invited a Russian government delegation to participate in the ceremonial events commemorating the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Kara-Kyrgyz Autonomous Region, scheduled to take place in Kyrgyzstan later this year.
Both leaders reaffirmed their mutual dedication to enhancing Kyrgyz-Russian relations, emphasizing the importance of sustained collaboration in various spheres, including trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
Russia remains a pivotal trade and economic partner for Kyrgyzstan, with bilateral trade experiencing a remarkable surge of 37% in 2022, reaching nearly $3.5bn. This momentum continued into the first half of 2023, with an additional increase of 17.9%. In addition, Russia holds the position of the primary investor in the Kyrgyz economy, contributing approximately 36% of the total foreign direct investment. Kyrgyzstan boasts 800 companies backed by Russian capital, underscoring the depth of economic ties between the two nations. Moreover, inter-regional collaboration is rapidly intensifying, with more than 80 regions in Russia actively engaged in partnerships with all seven regions of Kyrgyzstan, signaling a robust framework for regional cooperation.
