On February 15, the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, embarked on a visit to the Andijan region. The first stop on his itinerary was the "Asaka Textile" textile cluster enterprise. Until 2016, the cluster was ineffective. However, with the encouragement and support of the president, entrepreneurs transformed the area into a dynamic production centre. As of August 2022, the $83mn project has established a comprehensive production chain, from raw materials to finished products. It also planned to establish a school for designers and technologists in the Andijan region, attracting famous brands and retailers, and increasing industry exports to $800mn.
The cluster cultivates cotton across 11,200 hectares in the Ulugnor and Jalakuduk districts of the Andijan region and the Yangibazar district of the Khorezm region. Of this, 2,700 hectares employ drip irrigation. The Asaka enterprise, equipped with machinery from Switzerland, Italy, Turkey, Germany, and Japan, boasts impressive production capabilities. It can produce 11,000 tonnes of yarn, 8,000 tonnes of terry and knitted fabric, dye 12,000 tonnes of yarn and fabric, and manufacture 6,000 tonnes of finished knitted fabric and towels. The enterprise employs 3,200 individuals.
The enterprise adheres to the quality control standards set by its foreign partners. It also operates a water purification facility for the dyeing shop, demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability.
The cluster, having implemented projects worth $102mn, has an annual export capacity of $50mn. This marks a significant economic shift compared to seven years ago. Plans include the establishment of a plant in the Ulugnor district to process 70,000 tonnes of cotton fibre and the creation of enterprises for knitwear and sock production, generating over 1,600 new jobs.
The concept of cotton-textile industry development in the Andijan region was also presented. It is projected that production costs will decrease by 15%, and added value will increase by 65%. The plan also includes the establishment of a school for designers and technologists, attracting famous brands and retailers, and increasing industry exports to $800mn.
The president also engaged with seamstresses at the enterprise. Some of them have returned from labour migration due to the availability of high-paying jobs in their home district.
