Abdusalom Azizov, Chairman of Uzbekistan's State Security Service, engaged in discussions with Mohammad Yaqoob, the acting Minister of Defense of the Taliban on February 1, Tolo news reported. The meeting aimed to address the expansion of bilateral relations, foster economic and transit cooperation, and deliberate on various pertinent issues between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.
The talks revealed a mutual interest in developing ties, with Mohammad Yaqoob expressing the Islamic Emirate's willingness to collaborate on implementing development projects. The meeting, held to strengthen relations, underlined the shared commitment of both parties towards fostering positive interactions.
This recent interaction follows a precedent set in March 2023 when the Minister of Defense of Afghanistan, Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob, hosted a delegation from Uzbekistan. During that meeting, Uzbekistan expressed its preparedness to assist the Taliban in various areas, including politics, economy, and security.
In a broader context, the January 2024 announcement highlighted the joint investment readiness of Uzbekistan, Turkey, Russia, Iran, and Kazakhstan in Afghanistan. The collaboration involves several companies from these nations investing in Afghanistan's mining and energy sectors, with specific projects targeting the construction of hydroelectric power stations. In addition to the mining and energy sectors, foreign investors are purportedly interested in participating in different facets of Afghanistan's progress, including agriculture, commerce, energy, railways, and infrastructure initiatives.
