Singapore's Wilmar International to construct $100mn plant in Uzbekistan

In a significant development facilitated by the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Singapore, an agreement has been inked for the establishment of a mega-factory and distribution hub in the Tashkent region of Uzbekistan. The signing ceremony, attended virtually by key stakeholders, featured the Minister of Agriculture of Uzbekistan, Ibrokhim Abdurakhmonov, the khokim (mayor) of Tashkent region, Zoir Mirzaev, and Kuok Hong Hong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Singapore's "Willmar International Limited," Dunyo News Agency reported.

The project entails the creation of a mega-plant in the Tashkent region dedicated to the production of flour products, vegetable oils, and high-protein feeds. The initial investment commitment from Willmar International Limited stands at an impressive $100 mn. The feasibility study for the project is expected to be completed in the first half of the current year.

The strategic vision behind this venture is underscored by the Singaporean company's intent to integrate Uzbekistan into its global supply chain. The construction of the mega-plant is deemed a pivotal move, providing Uzbekistan with a strategic position as a significant regional and global exporter to markets in Central Asia, the Middle East, and beyond, Dunyo News Agency adds.

The envisaged site for the project spans 30 hectares in the village of Surum, Tashkent region. This location boasts strategic significance due to its proximity to key transportation networks, including the railway and the Tashkent ring road. The choice of Surum aligns with the project's future expansion plans to accommodate growth.

During the virtual negotiations, the parties involved expressed their commitment to fostering close cooperation to expedite the commencement of the project. The collaboration signifies a robust economic partnership, leveraging Singaporean expertise and investment to bolster Uzbekistan's position in the global market for flour products, vegetable oils, and high-protein feeds.
