Kabul and Mazar-e-Sharif, major cities in Afghanistan, are grappling with a surge in violence as multiple explosions rock these urban centers. The incidents, occurring within a short timeframe, have resulted in casualties, sparking worries about the deteriorating security situation, Daryo correspondent in Afghanistan reported.
Explosions in Kabul
The Dasht Barchi area in Kabul experienced two recent explosions, the latest on Thursday, January 11. Conflicting reports surround the incident. While the Taliban's official count indicates two deaths and 12 injuries, eyewitnesses claim a higher toll, with more than 10 fatalities. Witnesses also report the Taliban removing individuals from the scene without explanation.
In the same area, a bus explosion resulted in two reported deaths and 14 injuries according to the Taliban, but UNAMA disputes these figures, suggesting 25 casualties. ISIS claimed responsibility for this blast, underscoring the complexity of Kabul's security.
Another blast struck Kabul on the same day, claimed by the "Afghanistan Liberation Front." The group asserted it targeted Taliban intelligence officers, resulting in three deaths and two injuries. The Taliban has not officially commented on this incident.
Explosion in Mazar-e-Sharif
Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province, witnessed an explosion in the Darwazai Balkh area, injuring at least five people. Witnesses attribute the blast to a car bomb, extending concerns beyond Kabul about the overall security in Afghanistan.
ISIS claimed responsibility for a separate blast in eastern Kabul earlier in the week, resulting in three deaths and four injuries.
