Uzbekistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have reached a significant agreement on the mutual recognition of driver's licenses, as reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The collaboration took shape during a meeting between the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Polat Bobojonov, and the Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, also serving as the Minister of the Interior, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan.
During the visit, the ministers signed a memorandum of understanding titled "On mutual recognition and exchange of driver's licenses between the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Government of the United Arab Emirates." This memorandum paves the way for citizens of both nations to use their national driver's licenses when driving in the other country's territory, excluding long-term residents.
The agreement also outlines provisions for Uzbekistan citizens residing in the UAE, particularly those holding long-term residency rights. Such individuals, possessing a national driver's license, will be exempted from undergoing the usual theoretical and practical tests when applying for an Emirates driver's license.
The report mentions that the memorandum is slated to come into effect on January 27, 2024.
In addition to the driver's license agreement, the meeting addressed broader cooperation areas. Both parties discussed joint efforts against transnational organized crime, terrorism, extremism, human trafficking, and cybercrime. The agenda also included plans for enhancing the skills of personnel in these critical areas, promoting experience sharing, and defining future collaborative initiatives.
