Meridiam, a French investment fund, has demonstrated keen interest in engaging in public-private partnership (PPP) projects within Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Economy and Finance's press service reports. On November 22, the Ministry Head, Jamshid Kuchkarov, hosted a delegation led by Remy Hassenforder, the Director of the Foundation for Eurasia. Abdukodir Yakubov, the Head of the PPP Development Department, was also present during the meeting.
Hassenforder provided an overview of Meridiam's successful implementation of social infrastructure projects in various countries and highlighted the fund's desire to contribute to the construction of innovative schools and hospitals in Uzbekistan's regions. Minister Kuchkarov expressed his support for the French Foundation's initiative to establish educational institutions. The discussions also encompassed potential projects in transport infrastructure, particularly the Bukhara-Samarkand and Tashkent-Andijan highways.
Plans for connecting the capital with Andijan through a new toll highway were initially disclosed in 2019. Subsequent information, published a year later, suggested that this connection might involve an alternative tunnel on Kamchik.
Furthermore, there are intentions to establish a toll road between Tashkent and Samarkand in Uzbekistan. In 2022, the PPP Development Agency unveiled plans for the Samarkand-Shahrisabz highway, estimating a travel cost of $5-6 for passenger cars on these forthcoming highways.
