Turkey's General Directorate of Migration Service reports that as of November 2023, more than 1.1 million foreigners with residence permits are living in the country, of which 104,446 are from Turkmenistan.
Russians top the list. They are followed by citizens of Iraq, Iran, Syria, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan (51,597).
In addition, 71,427 Turkmen citizens have short-term residence permits, 15,031 have student visas and 6,287 have family visas.
Until recently, Turkmen citizens could visit Turkey without a visa (for up to 30 days). However, at the request of the Turkmen Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the visa-free regime adopted by Turkey some 15 years ago was cancelled in September 2022.
Official Ashgabat noted that this measure is "temporary" and will allow "to improve and maintain on a systematic basis the rules of stay of Turkmen citizens in the Republic of Turkey".
