In a step towards addressing environmental challenges, an agreement has been reached between the Ministry of Ecology of Uzbekistan and the Chinese National Society for Combating Desertification. The accord was established during a bilateral meeting between Minister of Ecology Aziz Abduhakimov and An Fengzi, Chairman of the National Society, held within the framework of the 21st session of the UN Convention on Desertification Review Committee (CRIC-21).
The meeting focused on collaborative efforts in researching land degradation and implementing sustainable land management practices. Both parties expressed their commitment to exchanging experiences and conducting joint research activities in regions of Uzbekistan that face a high risk of dust and sand storms.
The Chinese National Society for Desertification Industry and Sandstorm Prevention, founded in 1992, plays a pivotal role in combating desertification in China. Led by Xu Jialu, former deputy chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, the society operates as a national-level academic, public, and non-profit organization. Its membership includes specialists, scientists, and entrepreneurs dedicated to the fight against desertification.
During the meeting, Minister Abduhakimov highlighted the increasing threat of dust and sand storms in the southern part of Uzbekistan and other regions. He detailed Uzbekistan's "Green Space" initiative, a crucial measure within the national framework to combat environmental issues. Minister Abduhakimov emphasized the necessity of reevaluating society's relationship with the land and nature.
China, under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, has implemented a comprehensive strategy to combat desertification and sandstorms. The strategy includes subsidizing pastures for farmers and the private sector, banning private pastures, promoting collective livestock through state farms, and restoring forest and grass cover on previously plowed land plots.
As a result of the fruitful discussions, an agreement was reached to establish close cooperation between the Ministry of Ecology and the Chinese National Society. Both parties plan to develop and sign a memorandum on scientific-practical cooperation in the field of combating desertification and land degradation.
