The Parliament of Kazakhstan has initiated a commission tasked with monitoring the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), following the example set by Uzbekistan. The announcement was made during a meeting between Tanzila Norbayeva, the Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan, and Maulen Ashimbayev, Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of Kazakhstan, on November 16 in Bishkek. The meeting took place within the framework of the plenary session of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the CIS member states.
Ashimbayev commended Uzbekistan's leadership in achieving the goals of sustainable development and expressed high regard for the work of the Parliamentary Commission monitoring the implementation of national goals and objectives in Uzbekistan until 2030. He emphasized the importance of learning from Uzbekistan's experience in this realm and acknowledged the launch of a similar commission in the Kazakh parliament.
The leaders of the upper houses of the parliaments of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan agreed to actively continue the practice of promoting joint initiatives and mutual support, fostering collaboration on shared sustainable development objectives.
UN's Support for Sustainable Development in Uzbekistan
In the pursuit of sustainable development, the United Nations (UN) and its partners in Uzbekistan are actively engaged in achieving the 17 interrelated and ambitious SDGs. Uzbekistan has affirmed its commitment to a comprehensive approach through multi-stakeholder partnerships to fulfill the tasks outlined in the 2030 global agenda and achieve 16 national goals related to the SDGs.
To ensure the prioritization of these goals across ministries, the Uzbek government, in October 2018, adopted an agenda until 2030, aligning it with national strategies and programs. A total of 16 national sustainable development goals, 125 tasks, and 206 indicators were approved by the government to facilitate their effective implementation.
In a proactive step towards accountability and oversight, Uzbekistan established a Parliamentary Commission dedicated to monitoring the implementation of national goals and objectives in sustainable development until 2030. The primary purpose of this commission is to ensure the timely and high-quality execution of the National Sustainable Development Goals and the associated "Roadmap."
Additionally, the commission aims to strengthen relations between citizens and state bodies, economic management bodies, and other organizations within the country, fostering parliamentary and public debates on sustainable development issues.
Looking forward, the Oliy Majlis and the Cabinet of Ministers, in collaboration with international organizations, are planning to organize the Sustainable Development Goals Month in November. This marks a historic event in Uzbekistan, demonstrating a collective commitment to advancing sustainable development and fostering national and international collaboration towards achieving these goals.
