Turkmenistan proposes to create a common energy supply system in the Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) region. This was stated by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov at the 16th ECO summit in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
(The structure, established in 1985 with Turkey, Iran and Pakistan, expanded its influence after the accession of five Central Asian countries, Azerbaijan and Afghanistan - Daryo).
Turkmenistan's news agency also quoted him as saying that global energy markets are in a generally unstable state.
"Turkmenistan is ready to increase the supply of natural gas and electricity to the ECO countries through the capacities currently available and to be built in the future."
According to Berdimuhamedov, this is necessary to increase the capacity of new industrial complexes and agriculture in the region, build infrastructure facilities and launch joint production projects.
Turkmenistan supplies pipeline gas to China (a key buyer, via Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan), Azerbaijan (via Iran), Russia and Uzbekistan. Country also sells electricity generated by natural gas to Afghanistan, Iran, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.
Experts told Daryo that Ashgabat is studying the possibility of supplying its energy resources to the markets of the Caucasus (via Iran) and South Asia (via Afghanistan). Recently, the issue of implementing the project to supply Turkmen gas to Europe via the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan and Turkey has become topical.
