Kazakhstan's €50bn Hyrasia One project aims for 2mn tonnes of green hydrogen by 2032

Kazakhstan's €50bn Hyrasia One project aims for 2mn tonnes of green hydrogen by 2032

The Head of State, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, met with Wolfgang Kropp, the CEO of Svevind Energy Group, to discuss the progress and significance of the ambitious "green" hydrogen project known as Hyrasia One. The meeting took place against the backdrop of ongoing efforts to propel Kazakhstan towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly energy future.

During their meeting, both parties exchanged insights into the implementation of the innovative project, which aims to produce "green" hydrogen in the Mangistau region. This forward-looking initiative was first established under an Investment Agreement signed during the visit of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, to Kazakhstan the previous year.

The Hyrasia One project encompasses a multifaceted approach to renewable energy and hydrogen production. It includes the construction and operation of a desalination plant, a massive 40 GW renewable energy plant utilizing wind and solar technologies, and a 20 GW water electrolysis plant. The combined output capacity of this undertaking is impressive, with an annual production target of 2mn tonnes of green hydrogen or 11mn tonnes of green ammonia. To accomplish this endeavor, a substantial initial investment exceeding €50bn is anticipated.

Wolfgang Kropp, the CEO of Svevind Energy Group, emphasized that the project's documentation is expected to be finalized by 2026. Construction works are scheduled to commence in 2027, with the project anticipated to be operational by 2032. This timeline underscores the long-term commitment and extensive planning required for such an ambitious project.

President Tokayev underscored the strategic significance of the Hyrasia One project for Kazakhstan, expressing confidence that it will become a flagship initiative for the development of renewable energy in the country. In his remarks, he noted that the timely implementation of the project holds immense importance for Kazakhstan's energy future.

Furthermore, the Head of State conveyed his strong belief that the Hyrasia One project will significantly contribute to Kazakhstan's carbon neutrality goal. With its focus on renewable energy sources and the production of green hydrogen, the project aligns with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy alternatives.
