A major traffic collision unfolded on a highway in the state of Louisiana, USA. A minimum of 158 vehicles were involved, some of which caught fire, as reported by CNN.
According to the Louisiana state police, at least 158 vehicles collided on October 23, October 23, along an interstate highway in St. John the Baptist Parish. As of now, seven fatalities have been confirmed, and over 25 individuals have been transported to hospitals with varying degrees of injuries.
Meteorological data indicates that a phenomenon known as a "super fog" occurred in the area at the time of the collision. A super fog is a dense fog that forms in humid and smoky conditions, reducing visibility to less than 3 meters. Additionally, reports suggest that some vehicles caught fire following the collision.
Local authorities noted that one of the vehicles involved in the accident was a tanker carrying an unspecified "hazardous substance." St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff Mike Tregre informed CNN that three 18-wheeler trucks collided on the northbound lanes, and they were fully engulfed in flames. He also mentioned that on the southbound lanes, multiple clusters of vehicles formed, one of which also ignited.
Due to the accident, emergency services had to proceed on foot because the area was completely blocked off. It's worth recalling that towards the end of last year, over 200 vehicles were involved in a massive pile-up in China due to heavy fog, occurring on a bridge in Zhengzhou in the central province of Henan, resulting in at least one fatality. Additionally, in February 2021, in the U.S. city of Fort Worth, Texas, a multi-car collision led to the tragic deaths of six individuals, with 36 others sustaining various injuries.
