Uzbekistani chess players showcased their dominance at the prestigious Qatar Masters Open tournament, outperforming renowned players such as Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura. Nodirbek Yakubboyev secured a sensational victory, defeating fellow countryman Nodirbek Abdusattorov in the final match. The tournament, held in Lusail, Qatar from October 11-20, featured 158 participants, including 58 grandmasters.
Yakubboyev ranked 153rd, emerged as the champion by winning 7 out of 9 matches and drawing the remaining 2. In a remarkable turnaround, he climbed from 6th place to claim the title, even defeating an Indian player who had previously defeated Magnus Carlsen. Yakubboyev's compatriot, 19-year-old Abdusattorov, secured the second-place position with an impressive performance of five wins and four draws.
17-year-old Zhavohir Sindarov showcased his skills by remaining undefeated throughout the tournament, securing four wins and five draws. Sindarov finished in fourth place after tie-breakers, earning commendation for his performance. The tournament also saw notable placements by Jahongir Vakhidov and Shamsiddin Vohidov in the top 30.
In the women's category, Vaishali Rameshbabu from India claimed first place by achieving the grandmaster norm, surpassing the 2500-point mark. Divya Deshmukh, also from India, secured second place, while Alua Nurmanova from Kazakhstan took third place.
