From November 13 to 17, 2023, the Silk Road Congress Hall in the historic city of Samarkand will host the 21st session of the Committee to Review the Implementation of the UN Convention (CRIC 21). This significant event, organized by the Government of Uzbekistan, will bring together nations and stakeholders to discuss and review the progress in combatting desertification and land degradation across the world.
CRIC 21 will witness consultations among participating countries focusing on the effective implementation of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). This convention addresses the critical issue of land degradation and aims to restore and rehabilitate land for sustainable use. The participating countries in focus include regions such as Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Northern Mediterranean, and Central and Eastern Europe.
One of the key objectives of CRIC 21 is to evaluate the progress made in accordance with the UNCCD Strategic Objectives, as outlined in the Strategy Framework 2018-2030. By assessing the achievements and challenges, the conference will provide targeted recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of combating desertification and achieving land degradation neutrality (LDN) goals.
CRIC 21 will also serve as a platform to showcase specific activities aimed at supporting countries in their voluntary efforts to set LDN targets. This includes examining how nations are implementing the strategy with support from the Global Mechanism and other relevant partners, such as the LDN Fund.
Additionally, the Intergovernmental Working Group on Effective Drought Management Policies and Implementation will present its progress report during CRIC 21. This segment of the conference will focus on addressing drought-related issues, a critical aspect of combatting desertification.
In line with Decision 7/COP15 (Annex I), a joint consultation will be conducted at CRIC 21 to provide recommendations and an independent assessment. The aim is to identify possible future actions that can further enhance the implementation of the UNCCD Strategic Framework 2018-2030.
Importantly, CRIC 21 will facilitate an interactive exchange of views between the participating Parties and their partners. This open dialogue will promote knowledge sharing and collaboration to address the challenges posed by land degradation and desertification more effectively.
The high-level event, held under the auspices of CRIC 21, signifies the commitment of the international community to combat desertification and restore degraded lands. Online registration for the conference is available starting from September 11, 2023, at www.unccd.int/cric-21-online-registration.
