Russia's President Vladimir Putin recently stated that Europe is isolating Russia with a new "iron curtain." Putin believes that the sanctions imposed by the West on Moscow have adversely affected the European economy. In contrast, the economies of the United States and Asia have become more competitive.
But we are not going to impose ourselves on Europe if they don't want us. We don't reject (it). We are not closing it (the "window to Europe"). You asked whether we are sorry or not. Why should we be sorry? It’s not us who slammed the door on joint communication. It is Europe that is fencing itself off from us and creating a new "iron curtain". We are not creating one, but Europeans are - to their own loss and to their own detriment,"
the President noted.
The competitiveness of the European economy has fallen, and the competitiveness of their main competitor, economically - the United States - has increased sharply. And (the competitiveness of) other countries, including in Asia, has increased dramatically. With their own hands, as a result of the loss of part of their sovereignty, (Europe) has been forced to make decisions to their own detriment. Why would we need a partner like that?"
During a question-and-answer session at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi, Putin reiterated that Russia was not isolating itself from Europe.
