Sharifbek Hasanov, the head of the Republican Center for Sanitary Cleaning Operations, held a meeting with Thomas Danestad, the Swedish Ambassador to Uzbekistan, and Vern Wikvist, a senior adviser from the Swedish Waste Management and Recycling Association. Uzbekistan is also actively working to implement Sweden's advanced waste management practices.
During the meeting, the focus was on enhancing cooperation in waste management between Uzbekistan and Sweden and expediting the integration of foreign best practices into the Uzbek waste management system. The participants also exchanged ideas regarding the assessment and analysis of the country's waste situation, including both short-term and long-term requirements in this field.
Sweden's waste management model places a strong emphasis on recycling and harnessing energy from waste. The discussion particularly emphasized the development and sustainable implementation of cutting-edge waste-to-energy technologies.
Previously, it was announced that a new household waste landfill would be established in the Ohangaron district of the Tashkent region by November 2023. Additionally, as of January 1, 2024, Uzbekistan will impose a 5% customs duty rate on the import of new cargo vehicles, such as garbage trucks and dump trucks, with an exemption from disposal fees.
