Kyrgyzstan and Japan join forces to combat air pollution and safeguard public health

In a bid to address the pressing issue of air pollution and its detrimental impact on public health, Kyrgyzstan and Japan have initiated a collaborative project. The discussions surrounding this vital initiative took place in Bishkek and were facilitated by the Republican Center for Health Promotion and Mass Communication.

The meeting saw the participation of a diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from the International Medical Faculty of Osh State University, the Department of Public Health at the International Higher School of Medicine, the Department of Global Health Promotion at Tokyo Medical and Dental University in Japan, the Hydrometeorological Service, the E-health Center, and the Republican Center for Health Promotion and Mass Communication.

Air pollution, recognized as a major environmental factor contributing to numerous diseases worldwide, was the focal point of the discussions. As per available data, air pollution is responsible for a staggering 12% of global deaths, underscoring the urgency of addressing this pervasive issue.

The collaborative effort between Kyrgyzstan and Japan intends to formulate a comprehensive strategy aimed at combatting air pollution, particularly in urban areas. Among the key objectives is the development of a robust system for assessing air quality based on satellite data and regional chemical-transport modeling. Additionally, the partners plan to establish an Air Pollution Research Center, known as IRCAPS, within Osh State University.

Looking ahead, IRCAPS, in conjunction with Japanese researchers, will work on assessing the health impacts of air pollution. This assessment will leverage data from a modernized national air pollution monitoring system and the E-health Center under the Ministry of Health. The resulting data will provide a crucial foundation for formulating recommendations to various organizations and agencies. These recommendations will be aimed at enhancing air quality, thereby mitigating adverse effects on public health, the environment, and the overall economy.

The collaborative effort between Kyrgyzstan and Japan represents a significant step towards addressing the pressing issue of air pollution. By combining their expertise and resources, the two nations aim to not only improve air quality but also safeguard the well-being of their citizens, and ultimately, contribute to a healthier and more sustainable future.
