The leadership of Chinese President Xi Jinping has unveiled a detailed plan aimed at transforming China's southeastern province of Fujian into a demonstration zone for integrated development with Taiwan.
On Tuesday, the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese government disclosed a set of 21 specific measures as part of their efforts to advance the goal of peaceful reunification with Taiwan. Fujian province shares a geographical proximity with Taiwan, facing it across the sea.
The policy signifies Beijing's intent to create a favorable business environment to attract Taiwanese companies to operate within the province. Additionally, it outlines plans to improve social welfare programs to facilitate Taiwanese citizens' employment and access to healthcare services in Fujian.
As part of the initiative, Beijing intends to expedite cross-strait development by promoting integration with residents of Taiwan's Kinmen Islands, which are situated in close proximity to Fujian. These measures encompass the provision of utilities such as gas and electricity to the islanders, as well as the construction of bridges to enhance connectivity between the province and the islands.
The Communist Party plans to reinforce its leadership in the region and expand financial support to facilitate the establishment of this integrated development zone.
Observers speculate that this move is a part of China's strategy to assert its economic influence over Taiwan, particularly in the lead-up to Taiwan's presidential election scheduled for January next year.
