In a solemn ceremony on September 2, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited the Hazrati Khizr complex in Samarkand to pay tribute to the memory of the First President of Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov. The Presidential Press Service reported that the head of state laid flowers at the mausoleum of Islam Karimov recited verses from the Quran, and offered prayers in remembrance of the esteemed leader.
Islam Karimov, the first president of independent Uzbekistan, played a pivotal role in guiding the nation through challenging periods in its history, ultimately ensuring the well-being and stability of the Uzbek people. President Mirziyoyev's visit to the mausoleum was a heartfelt gesture of gratitude and respect for the significant contributions made by the late leader.
The legacy of Islam Karimov has been honored and preserved through various initiatives initiated by President Mirziyoyev. On January 25, 2017, the head of state issued a decree to perpetuate the memory of the First President. As a result, numerous major assemblies and central streets in cities throughout Uzbekistan were named after Islam Karimov, ensuring that his name remains embedded in the nation's collective memory.
Additionally, a scientific and educational memorial complex bearing Islam Karimov's name was established in the capital city of Tashkent, serving as a hub for preserving the history and legacy of the First President. A mausoleum was also erected in Samarkand, further cementing his place in the hearts of the Uzbek people.
During the commemoration ceremony at Hazrati Khizr complex, President Mirziyoyev emphasized the enduring respect and admiration the Uzbek people hold for Islam Karimov.
"Our people, who honor their sacrifices, remember our First President with respect. This commemoration ceremony is also a tribute to the memory of those who passed away and a lesson for the younger generation," the statement read.
The event was attended by prominent members of the parliament, government officials, representatives of public organizations, and respected labor veterans, underscoring the significance of this occasion in Uzbekistan's history.
After paying his respects at the mausoleum, President Mirziyoyev returned to Tashkent, leaving behind a poignant reminder of the nation's commitment to preserving the legacy of its founding father, Islam Karimov.
