Thirteen people have lost their lives following intense Sunday rains across multiple areas in Tajikistan, according to a statement from President Emomali Rahmon's press office. It is not specified under what circumstances people died.
"Due to heavy rainfall in Vakhdat city and the Rudaki district, a natural disaster occurred yesterday, resulting in the tragic loss of thirteen lives, including eleven in Vakhdat and two in Rudaki," the press release reported.
According to TASS, President Rahmon expressed condolences to the bereaved families and instructed the country's prime minister, the Emergency Situations and Civil Defense Committee, and other relevant bodies to offer assistance to those affected by the disaster and take immediate action to address its consequences.
The torrential rain on August 27, caused road flooding and landslides in Dushanbe and various parts of the country. Notably, a road landslide on the Dushanbe-Chanak route damaged multiple vehicles and necessitated road closure. Clearing machinery is currently operational at the site. Social media users also shared videos of flooded roads in different regions, including the capital.
As reported by ASIA-Plus, the heavy downpours have inflicted significant damage to the highway connecting Dushanbe and Khujand. The inclement weather resulted in floods, landslides, and rockfalls on the Dushanbe-Chanak route.
