The fairy tale romance that captured headlines just over a year ago has taken an unexpected turn, as Sam Asghari, husband to pop icon Britney Spears, has filed for divorce.
Asghari, 29, cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split, as per documents filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court on August 16. The couple tied the knot in a highly-publicized wedding last year, shortly after Britney Spears was released from a legal conservatorship that had controlled her life for more than a decade.
In an Instagram post, Asghari announced the decision to part ways, stating:
"We have decided to end our journey together."
He went on to express his enduring respect and love for Spears, asking for kindness and understanding from the public and the media. Asghari's request for spousal support and legal fees indicates a complex legal process could be ahead.
Representatives for Britney Spears have yet to comment on the situation, leaving fans and the media speculating about the details of the divorce.
The couple's union took place 14 months ago in June 2022, after dating for nearly six years. The wedding was a significant milestone for Spears, coming on the heels of a court decision to terminate the conservatorship that had overseen her life and finances for an astonishing 13 years. Throughout the legal proceedings, Spears expressed her desire to marry and build a family without any legal constraints.
The conservatorship, originally established by the singer's father, Jamie Spears, in response to her public struggles and mental health challenges in 2007, had long been a subject of controversy and debate. With its termination, Britney Spears was poised to take back control of her life, making the wedding with Asghari a symbolic step towards her newfound freedom.
This divorce marks the third marital split for Spears. Her first marriage, a surprise ceremony in Las Vegas with childhood friend Jason Alexander, was annulled shortly after it occurred in 2004. Her second marriage, to dancer Kevin Federline, resulted in two children before ending in divorce in 2007.
As for Asghari, the Iranian-born personal trainer and actor has carved a niche for himself in the entertainment industry, notably appearing on the Showtime series "Black Monday."
