Oleksandr Anatolyevich Senchenko, the interim representative of Ukraine in Armenia, lost his life by drowning in Lake Sevan, a mountainous waterbody located 1,905 m (6,250ft) above sea level. The incident occurred on August 13, 2023, press service of the Ukrainian MFA reports.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine deeply regrets the tragic death on 13 August 2023 of an experienced and highly qualified diplomat, Charge d’Affaires of Ukraine to the Republic of Armenia Oleksandr Senchenko.”
Earlier accounts from Armenian media indicated the fatality of an individual in Lake Sevan. The event unfolded at 8:17 PM local time on August 13 when lifeguards on duty noticed the disappearance of a person who had been swimming in the lake.
Lifeguards promptly intervened and retrieved the individual from the water. Medical personnel arriving at the scene confirmed the unfortunate passing of the individual. Subsequent reports from media sources identified the deceased as an advisor to the Ukrainian ambassador in Armenia.
The diplomat's surprising death has raised questions as he was found some 25m (80ft) offshore in water that was just 152cm (5ft) deep and at a temperature of 22°C (71.6°). Lifeguards aboard a boat retrieved his body, but paramedics' efforts to revive him proved futile.
Alexander Senchenko has been a part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2003. Over the course of his diplomatic journey, he served in various capacities within the Ministry, including the first regional department and the Department of Euro-Atlantic Cooperation. He also undertook extended business trips to Armenia.
