Starting from September 1, 2023, all elementary school students in Kazakhstan will receive free meals, as announced by the Ministry of Education's press service.
This includes even children from low-income families who are in higher grades. Over 1.5 mn people fall under this category, equivalent to the number of students in grades 1 to 4. (Middle school 7-10 years-old)
The cost of free meals in Kazakhstan averages KZT 577 ($1,28) and goes up to KZT 800 ($1,77)) in Almaty.
According to Danya Maktaeva, head of the Children's Rights Protection Committee, the previous year's coverage of students with free meals was 56.6 %. This service is available for students in cities such as Astana, Almaty, Shymkent, Pavlodar, West Kazakhstan, Karaganda, Ulan-Ude, Kyzylorda, and Atyrau regions.
In early August, Uzbekistan's Minister of Economy and Finance, Jamshid Kochkorov, announced the introduction of free meal systems for elementary school students in the Khorezm region and Karakalpakstan.
