Irish singer and activist Sinéad O'Connor passed away at the age of 56. Best known for her iconic single "Nothing Compares 2 U," released in 1990, she achieved worldwide success and touched millions with her music, BBC reports.
Irish PM Leo Varadkar and President Michael D. Higgins paid heartfelt tributes, praising her talent and authenticity.
Born in Glenageary, County Dublin, in 1966, O'Connor had a challenging childhood and found solace in music. She released her debut album "The Lion And The Cobra" in 1987 and followed up with "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got," which included "Nothing Compares 2 U," written by Prince. Her music often carried strong social and political messages.
Throughout her career, O'Connor remained fearless in expressing her views, leading to significant events like her protest against the Catholic Church on the U.S. TV show Saturday Night Live in 1992. She converted to Islam in 2018 and changed her name to Shuhada, but continued performing under her birth name. Tragedy struck her life when her 17-year-old son Shane passed away in 2022.
O'Connor paid tribute to Shane in one of her final tweets, calling him "the love of my life, the lamp of my soul, we were one soul in two halves".
Following O'Connor's death, tributes poured in from around the world, praising her extraordinary talent and unique voice. Irish Deputy Prime Minister Micheal Martin called her one of Ireland's greatest musical icons.
O'Connor's music was characterized by passionate emotion and a punk spirit that left a lasting impact on her audience. Her legacy as a protest singer will be cherished and remembered by music enthusiasts worldwide.
