In the aftermath of historic flooding in Nova Scotia, Canada, emergency teams have discovered the body of a 52-year-old man and other human remains while searching for four missing people, The Guardian reported on July 24. The severe flooding was caused by more than 200mm (7.87in) of rain that hit some regions of Nova Scotia over the weekend. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has been leading search and rescue efforts to locate two children, a youth, and another man who were in two vehicles submerged in floodwater.
The devastating floods have had significant impacts on the close-knit community of West Hants, where the missing individuals reside. The RCMP is working tirelessly to find the missing persons and drain farm fields measuring close to 40 hectares (100 acres) in their search efforts. The situation has been described as a heartbreaking day for the province, and the mayor of West Hants, Abraham Zebian, expressed deep concern for the affected families and the devastating damage caused by the flooding.
On July 21, heavy rain started in the southern Atlantic region of the province and then moved over Halifax and the interior. John Lohr, the minister responsible for the Emergency Management Office, emphasised the seriousness of the flooding and the need for strong actions to protect the people of Nova Scotia.
The heavy rainfall and flooding have prompted Nova Scotia to declare a province-wide state of emergency, with flooding reaching levels not seen since Hurricane Beth in 1971. The extreme weather event has caused widespread damage to infrastructure, including bridges, roads, buildings, homes, and wastewater pumping stations. The floods come in the wake of record-breaking wildfires that had already ravaged parts of the province in recent months
The community has come together to offer help and support, but authorities are urging residents to stay away from the search area to avoid interfering with the efforts of the search teams and their search dogs. The scale of the destruction and the potential risks to roads and infrastructure underscore the severity of the situation, and residents are being urged to prioritise their safety and let the experts handle the rescue and recovery operations.
