The case surrounding the fundraising for the family of the police officer who shot and killed 17-year-old Nael Merzouk in France has taken a contentious turn. On July 19, Anadolu Ajansi reported that the French prosecutors have initiated an investigation into the collection of donations following a complaint from the murdered teenager's mother, who accuses Jean Messiah, an ultra-right politician and publicist close to Eric Zemmour, of fraud and deceptive practices in the fundraising campaign. She alleges that her son was portrayed unfairly as a malicious recidivist in the campaign.
Messiah, the organiser of the fundraiser, vehemently denies any wrongdoing and dismisses the accusations as unfounded. He claims that his critics are envious of the campaign's "success," and insists that all the funds, totaling €1.6 mn (nearly $1.8 mn) have been transferred to the wife of the shooter. Despite the controversy, the amount raised for the Nael family is approaching half a million euros.
