Greece is grappling with a relentless battle against raging wildfires as the country braces for another heatwave, exacerbating the already challenging conditions. The combination of strong winds and scorching temperatures has hindered efforts to bring the large fires under control, prompting authorities to seek assistance from other nations.
For the past three days, wildfires have been ravaging areas west of the capital city, Athens, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Forests have been reduced to ash, and homes have been consumed by the flames, leading to widespread evacuations. The situation is particularly dire on the island of Rhodes, where a virgin forest located in the center of the island is currently ablaze. Hundreds of firefighters, supported by seven aircraft, are tirelessly battling the inferno.
However, as authorities struggle to contain the fires, some residents in parts of Attica, where the fire has been extinguished, express frustration and anger towards the response efforts. They claim that the authorities did not do enough to protect their homes during the initial stages of the fire.
Residents recounted their experiences, with one man stating;
"I believe they just let it burn. The fire went through the community. Thank heavens nothing serious happened to my house, but for others, it is difficult at the moment."
A woman echoed his sentiments, saying;
"As you can see, everything is burnt. Our municipality was nowhere to be seen. The fire department came towards the afternoon and only one helicopter that dropped water only once."
Unfortunately, the challenges are expected to intensify with the arrival of a new heatwave forecasted to commence on July 20. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, several countries have stepped forward to lend their support. Italy and France have sent aircraft to aid in firefighting operations, while crews from Romania, Poland, and Slovakia have also been deployed to assist Greece in battling the relentless blazes.
As the country braces for the impending heatwave, authorities are working tirelessly to mobilize resources and implement strategies to combat the wildfires. The safety and protection of affected communities remain the top priority as Greece grapples with this ongoing crisis.
