Tesla has announced that its first production Cybertruck electric pickup has finally rolled off the assembly line at its Giga Texas factory. This milestone comes nearly two years behind the original schedule set by the company. Tesla shared a photo on July 15 through its official Twitter account, showcasing numerous workers in helmets and yellow vests surrounding the groundbreaking vehicle.
The unveiling of the Cybertruck took place in late 2019, with Tesla initially aiming for production to commence in late 2021. However, the company later revised its estimates and cautioned that production would start slowly, with lower volumes compared to its other vehicle models. Despite some skepticism from analysts who view the Cybertruck as a niche product with limited market appeal, Tesla remains optimistic about its prospects.
In April, Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated that the company expected to deliver the first trucks in the July-through-September quarter, acknowledging the challenges of manufacturing such a unique vehicle. Musk emphasized that the production process for the Cybertruck differed significantly from traditional cars, requiring additional time to fine-tune the manufacturing line.
The truck's 2019 unveiling encountered a minor setback when the supposedly unbreakable window was accidentally cracked during a demonstration. This incident prompted a humorous response from Musk, who exclaimed an expletive on stage. Despite the mishap, Tesla continued to forge ahead with the development of the Cybertruck.
Initially, Tesla planned to offer three different versions of the Cybertruck, ranging in price from approximately $40,000 to $70,000. However, the company later removed the pricing information from the order page, where customers can place a $100 deposit to secure their order.
Meanwhile, other automakers have joined the race to capture the electric truck market. Ford unveiled its F-150 Lightning, an electric version of its popular pickup truck, while Rivian Automotive introduced the R1T, another electric truck model. Unlike the Cybertruck, both Ford and Rivian's offerings maintain the conventional appearance of traditional pickups.
Tesla is set to release its second-quarter financial results on July 19, providing further insights into the company's progress and financial performance. As the production of the Cybertruck ramps up, Tesla hopes to make a significant impact in the electric pickup truck market and solidify its position as a leading innovator in the automotive industry.
