Astana Ballet, the renowned ballet company based in Kazakhstan, celebrated its milestone 10th anniversary with a spectacular program that showcased the best of its performances over the past decade. The special program featured a diverse range of ballet excerpts, highlighting the theater's growth, artistic achievements, and cultural richness.
The audience was treated to excerpts from popular classical and neoclassical ballets, such as "Le Corsair," "Spartacus," "Carmen Suite," "Legend of Love," and "Arular Sherui" (Parade of Beauties). These timeless masterpieces mesmerized the crowd with their beauty and grace, capturing the essence of the ballet art form.
Additionally, the program included works by Brazilian choreographer Ricardo Amarante, known for his thought-provoking pieces. Spectators were enthralled by the performances of "Diversity," "Love Fear Loss," and "A Fuego Lento," which explored themes of love, desire, passion, and attraction, offering a unique perspective on human emotions.
The ballet company also showcased excerpts from its concert programs, "Eastern Rhapsody" and "The Heritage of the Great Steppe." These pieces skillfully combined ethnographic elements with modern choreography, resulting in a captivating collection of dance miniatures. Nurlan Kanetov, the artistic director of Astana Ballet, expressed his pride in the theater's diverse repertoire and its ability to present remarkable productions. He explained that the anniversary program aimed to demonstrate the company's growth by featuring performances from its early days, renowned ballet masterpieces, national programs, and original works created specifically for the theater. “We included performances of early productions, world ballet masterpieces, our national programs, and original ballets created specifically for the theater. This program is a testament to the theater’s growth and artistic achievements, offering a captivating display of talent, creativity, and cultural richness,” he stated.
Lead soloist Tatiana Ten, who has been with the theater since its inception, highlighted the evolution of the company. Initially consisting solely of female dancers performing national programs, the addition of male dancers expanded the theater's possibilities, allowing them to explore diverse plot-based ballets. Ten also expressed her appreciation for both classical and neoclassical choreography, emphasizing how they offer distinct avenues for self-expression and artistic individuality.
In addition to the breathtaking performances, the audience had the opportunity to view archival photographs from the theater's history and marvel at the elegant, elaborately embroidered costumes. The intricate craftsmanship of the costumes added an extra layer of beauty to the evening's festivities. Furthermore, a makeup demonstration provided insights into the artistry and attention to detail that contribute to the magic of ballet performances.
Tracy Jersy, a visitor from the United States, expressed her delight with the theater's ambiance and the stunning costumes on display. She expressed her excitement about the performances lined up for the evening, particularly highlighting "The Heritage of the Great Steppe" for its ability to showcase the uniqueness of Kazakh folklore dance.
“I am delighted to have the opportunity to enjoy several performances that the theater stages tonight, including ‘The Heritage of the Great Steppe,’ which reveals the uniqueness of the Kazakh folklore dance,” she said.
