Jogorku Kenesh of Kyrgyzstan proposed to fine those who did not participate in voting in the presidential and deputy elections in Kyrgyzstan, Economist reports.
Such changes are expected to be made to the law "On the Election of the President and Deputies of the Kyrgyz Republic". The document was submitted for discussion on the Jogorku Kenesh website.
The amendments stipulate that every citizen who refuses to vote in the elections of the Kyrgyz President and Jogorku Kenesh deputies may be fined 5,000 Kyrgyz som ($56.90). Only those who missed voting for valid reasons are excluded. The criteria for such reasons are not specified in the draft law.
It is noted that in many Westernized countries, including Australia, Brazil, and Turkey, there is a practice of prosecuting citizens who do not come to the polls without valid reasons. According to the document, this measure ensures sufficient activity in the election.
