The head of artificial intelligence at Microsoft, Eric Boyd, dismisses concerns about AI seizing power and emphasises its potential to transform the relationship between people and computers. Despite concerns from some experts in the field about the rapid growth and unpredictability of AI, Microsoft remains committed to accelerating its work on large AI models.
Microsoft's investment in OpenAI enabled the development of GPT4, a powerful language model, which has been integrated into various Microsoft products, including Bing search engine and the Copilot virtual digital assistant.
Boyd believes that AI will redefine human-machine interfaces, making them more language-based and intuitive.
“People talk about how artificial intelligence is taking control, but it has no way to take control. These are models that produce text as a result,” states Boyd in his interview to Sky News on July 7.
He downplays concerns about the rapid development of large generative AI models, stating that experts' worries seem far removed from the practical applications they are working on. Boyd emphasises that AI models are simply tools that produce text as output and do not possess the capability to take over.
Instead, Boyd expresses concern about the potential for AI to amplify existing societal issues. While Microsoft acknowledges the feedback and considerations from experts, they remain focused on harnessing the power of AI to drive human productivity and economic growth globally. The company's vision is centred around leveraging AI to enhance human-computer interactions and improve various software products.
However, in some countries, there have been discussions about limiting the use of AI. The administration of US President Joe Biden has begun considering the need to regulate programs based on artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT. This is due to concerns that these programs could be used for criminal activities and the spread of false information.
