On July 8, a tragic incident unfolded in Brooklyn and Queens, resulting in the loss of one life and injuries to three others in a series of shootings. The New York Police Department categorized these incidents as "random" in nature, CNN has reported.
Law enforcement authorities took a 25-year-old suspect into custody, discovering a 9mm pistol with an extended magazine in their possession during a press conference held on Saturday afternoon.
"The motive remains unknown, suggesting a truly random occurrence. Based on video evidence, it appears that the shooter did not target specific individuals, nor did they pursue anyone. While riding their scooter, they indiscriminately fired at people.", stated Joseph Kenny, Assistant Chief of the New York Police Department's Detective Bureau.
Based on police reports, detectives obtained surveillance footage capturing the suspect approaching a victim from behind on a scooter and firing a single shot.
Additional incidents were reported where no injuries occurred, but witnesses described the suspect randomly firing shots while riding the scooter. Two more individuals, a 44-year-old man with a cheek injury and a 63-year-old man shot in the right shoulder, were hospitalized and are currently in critical and stable condition, respectively.
Edward Caban, the Acting Commissioner of the New York Police Department, noted that police officers successfully located and apprehended the suspect due to the prompt dissemination of his photograph among all surrounding police officers. They urgently alerted all nearby officers to remain vigilant and actively take measures in the search for the shooter.
Authorities are actively investigating these incidents to determine the motive behind the shootings and apprehend the suspect responsible. The community is in shock and mourning the loss of life and injuries caused by these indiscriminate acts of gun violence.
New York has experienced a disturbing increase in criminal activity following the pandemic. Major crimes surged by 42.7% through April 2022 compared to the same period in 2021, with a significant 9.2% rise in homicides over the course of two years.
