Kazakhstan celebrates its state holiday, the Day of the Capital, on July 6. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the country's main city, Astana, as reported by Zakon.kz.
The date of July 6 was chosen as it was the day in 1994 when the Supreme Council of Kazakhstan decided to relocate the capital from Almaty to Akmola. Later, on May 6, 1998, the first President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, renamed Akmola to Astana. The day of the capital was first celebrated on June 10 at a local level, but only in 2006 was it moved to July 6. In 2008, the holiday was granted state status, and since then, July 6 has been considered a holiday for the entire country.
President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called the decision to move the capital fateful, as it was made during a difficult period when the economy was stagnant and people were not fully adapted to market relations.
Despite this, Astana is continuing to develop dynamically, and its international reputation is growing. The capital has become a platform for dialogue and understanding the country with various positions and interests. The President emphasized that Astana is the heart of the Motherland, where important decisions are made and a bright future awaits.
This year, Kazakhstanis have a four-day break on July 6-9 to celebrate the Day of the Capital. All regions have prepared a rich festive program with concerts, flashmobs, and exhibitions.
