Askar Akayev, the former president of Kyrgyzstan, has expressed his intention to return to his homeland after retiring from his current position. This information was shared by Akayev himself with journalists following a lecture he gave at a university in Yekaterinburg, 24.kg reports.
Currently employed at Moscow State University (MSU), Akayev and his wife visited Bishkek in May 2023 to deliver a lecture at one of the local higher educational institutions. However, their visit faced strong opposition from numerous students, as well as some deputies and teachers. As a result, the Kyrgyz Ministry of Education canceled Akayev's speech at universities in Bishkek.
In February 2023, Kyrgyzstan's current president, Sadyr Japarov, organized a meeting in the United Arab Emirates with all former presidents of Kyrgyzstan, including Askar Akayev, Kurmanbek Bakiyev, Roza Otunbayeva, Almazbek Atambayev, and Sooronbay Jeenbekov. Japarov referred to this event as a negotiation for stability and national unity.
Askar Akayev served as the president of the Kyrgyz SSR from October 27, 1990, to August 31, 1991, and as the president of the Kyrgyz Republic from August 31, 1991, to April 11, 2005. He won the presidential elections four times in 1990, 1991, 1995, and 2000.
On March 24, 2005, Akayev managed to flee the country with the assistance of special services, following widespread public protests that involved clashes with the police, the siege of the presidential residence, and looting. The protests were sparked by election fraud and unconstitutional changes made for personal gain.
Since then, the Akayev family has been residing in Moscow.
