The Iraqi Foreign Ministry has requested that Sweden extradite Salwan Momika, a 37-year-old Iraqi refugee who set fire to a Quran in front of a mosque in Stockholm.
The ministry urged the Swedish authorities to hand over the refugee for trial in Iraq based on the country's laws. In response to the incident, the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Sweden's ambassador and lodged a strong protest against the desecration of the holy book of Muslims.
The burning of the Quran in Stockholm on June 28 sparked outrage, leading to protests near the Swedish embassy in Iraq, with some individuals attempting to storm the building. Baghdad condemned the act and warned of potential negative consequences, emphasizing that it should not be justified as freedom of expression.
Turkey denounced the incident as an "anti-Islamic act," and Morocco decided to recall its ambassador from Sweden in response.
