Officials from 135 countries gathered at the UN headquarters in New York City for a historic collective yoga session on the garden lawn. The event, held on International Yoga Day, set a record and earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records, UN News reports.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the unifying power of yoga, which brings together the body and mind, humanity, and nature. He highlighted its importance in a world that faces division and danger. Guterres stated that yoga offers a pathway to peace of mind, helping to manage anxiety and improve mental health. It also promotes discipline, patience, and a connection to the planet, fostering a sense of unity among people despite their differences.
The term "yoga" in Sanskrit means "connection" and symbolizes the integration of the body and consciousness. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends yoga classes and has included it in the Global Plan of Action to increase physical activity until 2030, recognizing its benefits for overall health.
Additionally, UNESCO recognized yoga as an intangible cultural heritage in 2016, acknowledging its profound impact on various aspects of Indian society, including health, medicine, education, and art.
