More young Arabs view China as an ally of their countries compared to the United States, according to a survey of regional youth, reported by CNN.
The Arab Youth Survey conducted by ASDA’A BCW revealed that China ranked second in terms of perceived friendliness, while the US ranked seventh.
The findings indicate a gradual increase in support for China as it expands its presence in the region. However, many Arabs still believe that the US will remain the most influential actor despite their desire for a reduced US role in the Middle East.
The survey showed that 80% of respondents consider China an ally, while 72% see the US in the same light. Both countries saw an increase in support compared to the previous year. The survey also highlighted changing sentiments among young Arabs, with Turkey ranking as the country most considered an ally.
A majority of respondents expressed support for US disengagement from the Middle East, particularly in North Africa and the Levant. While China's popularity has risen, two-thirds of young Arabs still view the US as a more important ally than China and Russia in the next five years.
The survey identified US support for Israel as a major factor influencing the US' unpopularity in the region. China, on the other hand, presents its economic agenda without strings attached, making it an attractive partner. Beijing's growing economic ties with the region, coupled with its diplomatic forays and non-interference policy, have contributed to its increasing influence.
Russia's reputation suffered a decline in popularity, falling to ninth place among countries considered allies by Arab youth, likely due to its involvement in conflicts across the Middle East, including the invasion of Ukraine.
