During a broadcast by BBC, Rear Adm Mauger, a spokesperson for the US Coast Guard, confirmed that the debris in the ocean earlier belonged to the touring submarine carrying five individuals. Speaking at a news briefing on the Titan sub, an expert stated that the size of the debris field discovered during the search indicated an implosion in the water column.
The submersible was located approximately 1,600 feet from the wreck of the Titanic, an area known to be devoid of Titanic debris, as the expert explained, describing it as a smooth bottom. The location of the debris field, around 656 feet from the bow, coincided with the last communication's implosion in the water column.
Rear Adm. John Mauger of the US Coast Guard cautioned that it was too early to determine the exact timing of the catastrophic implosion. However, he mentioned that sonar buoys deployed continuously during the search did not detect any catastrophic events.
Earlier reports indicated that the submersible carried one pilot and four passengers, losing contact with a surface vessel about one hour and 45 minutes into its dive on June 18. The group, including OceanGate Expeditions' founder and CEO Stockton Rush, French Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, British billionaire Hamish Harding, and Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood with his nineteen-year-old son, embarked on an eight-hour trip to the Titanic wreckage site before losing communication.
Rear Adm. John Mauger stated that medical personnel and the nine vessels involved in the search would begin demobilization within 24 hours, while remote operations on the sea floor would continue indefinitely.
Regarding the earlier sonar-detected banging noises, a US Coast Guard official mentioned that no apparent connection existed between those noises and where the Titan's debris was found on the sea floor. However, Rear Adm. John Mauger acknowledged that he would consult with experts to ensure no potential connection had been overlooked.
As for a possible investigation, Rear Adm. Mauger noted that it was too early to discuss, as it would be a decision made separately from the ongoing search efforts.
The wreckage of the Titanic rests approximately 900 miles off Cape Cod, an essential piece of information given the context.
