French President Emmanuel Macron met with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud on June 16 to discuss various issues, including the Ukraine conflict and Middle East conflicts, Politico reports.
During a dinner, Macron reportedly urged bin Salman to use his influence with Russia. Bin Salman is on a week-long visit to Paris, where he will participate in a summit on a new global financial pact and support Saudi Arabia's bid for hosting the World Expo 2030.
Saudi Arabia's stance on Russia's aggression in Ukraine has been described as "ambiguous" in the past. While Saudi Arabia voted for UN resolutions condemning Russia's actions, it also opposed the United States call to increase oil production to reduce oil revenues. However, the Elysée Palace representative mentioned that Saudi Arabia has shown progress in this regard.
The discussions between Macron and bin Salman will also focus on efforts to restore relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran and to alleviate tensions in Lebanon.
