High-ranking American officials, speaking anonymously to Politico, have revealed that the future of US aid to Ukraine and President Joe Biden's international reputation hinge on the success of Ukraine's counteroffensive.
They suggest that if Ukraine's attack fails to achieve significant progress or collapses entirely, military and economic support to Ukraine may cease, and calls for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict could intensify.
Sources cited by the publication indicate that Congress may withhold additional funding for Ukraine once the current aid package expires. Any misstep in the initiation of Ukraine's offensive could also provide Republicans in Congress with a pretext to block Democratic initiatives aimed at increasing defense spending.
Concern is growing in Washington over reported attacks on Russian territory. While Ukrainian leadership has not confirmed involvement in these strikes, American officials express doubts and believe that Kyiv, or at least pro-Ukrainian forces, may be responsible for the drone attack on the Kremlin and the bombings resulting in the death of Russian blogger Vladlen Tatarsky.
Politico reports that the United States has issued stern warnings through diplomatic channels in response to these events. However, the sources acknowledged that a successful Ukrainian offensive could strengthen Western support for Ukraine.
In May, Politico reported that the United States has not completely ruled out the possibility of freezing the Russia-Ukraine conflict for an extended period, although both Moscow and Kyiv oppose such a scenario.
However, on June 11, the Ukrainian troops managed to free Blagodatnoye village in Donetsk region and Lobkove village in Zaporizhzhia region, making it their first success since the start of counterattacks two days ago.
