Unnamed American officials state that US intelligence suspects the Ukrainian military or intelligence services may have played a role in the drone attack on the Kremlin in early May, NYT reports.
The suspicion arises from intercepted messages exchanged between Ukraine and Russia. However, concrete evidence of Ukrainian involvement has not been presented.
US intelligence is unable to definitively determine the responsible party behind the attack or ascertain whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials had prior knowledge of the incident. American officials believe that the drone attack may be part of a series of operations carried out without Ukrainian control, which raises concerns for the United States.
The drone attack on the Kremlin, captured in a video released on May 3, caused no injuries or significant damage to the building. The Russian government labeled it as an act of terrorism and an assassination attempt on the Russian president. Ukrainian authorities deny any involvement in the incident.
Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian president, accused the United States of orchestrating the drone attack on the Kremlin. In response, the White House dismissed Russia's accusations as "absurd."
